Love for ski jumping – strong enough to build a modern ski jumping centre
Ladies' Ski Jumping World Cup will visit Ljubno ob Savinji on 14th and 15th February 2015. It just so happens that the FIS calendar for the 2014/2015 season rewarded Ljubno with the competitions on Valentine's Day in 2015, which nicely symbolises the love and endeavours the organisers of the smallest town in the World Cup have shared over the last four years on the path of organising World Cup competitions at the highest level. The girls of the Slovenian national team have thanked the organisers for their hard work by declaring their attack on the podium places, especially since Špela Rogelj achieved the first Slovene victory ever in the World Cup at the start of the season.

Two competition days will offer jumps by the top female ski jumpers, including the three leading jumpers of the season, Sara Takanashi, Daniela Iraschko-Stolz and Špela Rogelj, who will all tackle the 95-m ski jump. At the start of this season, Špela was the first Slovene female ski jumper to achieve the historic World Cup win and is currently placed 3rd in the World Cup rankings. All this will surely contribute to the event in Ljubno being even more exciting and attractive.
The strong passion and love for ski jumping and the determined work in the organisation of the World Cup events will pay off greatly for the people of Ljubno. The demands of the International Ski Federation (FIS) require a modern reconstruction of the Ljubno ski jump as part of the newly constructed ski jumping centre Savina. The Municipality of Ljubno expects the construction works on the ski jump to start immediately after the event in February. The work should be finished by autumn 2015. If everything goes according to plan, the next Ljubno World Cup competition will take place on a modern ski jump. The new ski jump will allow jumps to as far as 110 m, with the plasticisation of the ski jump also enabling jumping in the summer. The reconstruction will surely enthral our ski jumpers, the local ski jumping club and all the young people from the entire Spodnja Savinjska region. The centre will offer new possibilities of spending quality free time and at the same time represent a stepping stone for a quicker development of the sports discipline which has been a part of the Ljubno culture since before WWII.
Ski jumping in Ljubno started to develop increasingly in 1953, when the people of Ljubno with the help of Stanko Bloudek built a 60-metre ski jump and organised the first noticeable competition event. More than twenty years ago the BTC d.d. Company became the sponsor of the event, and together with the BTC Management Board president, Jože Mermal, offered financial and organisational help with the events in Ljubno. The organisers in Ljubno received an additional boost and started first with the organisation of the Continental Cup competitions, followed by the World Cup competitions.
Špela Rogelj commented on her first win and her expectations for the competitions in Ljubno: ”It is a great feeling to be the first to write Slovene sports history. For me especially, since I am a part of the team which is breaking ground in ski jumping. It really means a lot to me to see my name listed along the first Slovenian women's ski jumping win in the World Cup. My wish is to see the girls and I achieve great results also at home in Ljubno, since our home event is really important to us because of all the fans.”
Welcome to Ljubno on 14th and 15th February. Come and see for yourself if the people of Ljubno are really crazy in love with ski jumping!
